No Assholes Allowed: The World’s Most Exclusive Clubs Are Embracing a New Policy
At Southworth, a private members’ club with several locations, including in the Bahamas and Colorado, they have an internal name for their policy: the “no-asshole rules.” More formally, it’s referred to as “the Southworth way.” The code of conduct, which all members have to sign, includes commitments such as this: “We offer complaints and constructive criticism productively—with the right audience and using the right tone.”
A New Bandon Dunes?
The latest example of Bandon emulation comes from the Village at Machrihanish Dunes, an off-the-beaten-path resort on the Kintyre Peninsula, in western Scotland. Already home to Machrihanish Dunes, an acclaimed links by David McLay Kidd, the Scottish-born designer of the original course at Bandon, the resort is on path to build a second 18.
Increasing Human Connection
How do you describe Southworth’s culture and how important has it been to maintain a family feel as the company has grown in size and scale? “This is one of my favorite questions. I’ve had the incredible and unique opportunity to watch my father run the company alongside Joe Deitch (father of my childhood friend, Matt Deitch) for many years, so stepping into this new role holds a lot of weight for me!– and I mean that in the best way possible.”
